Orca and Widevine Provide Secure, End-To-End TV Over IP in Taiwan for One of the World?€™s Largest Multimedia On Demand Deployments
Deployment with Chunghwa Telecom demonstrates how to safeguard premium content, which will increase subscriber base and revenues
May 4, 2004 |
RA’ANANA, Israel and SEATTLE – May 4, 2004 – Orca Interactive, a member of the Emblaze Group (LSE: BLZ) and a global market leader in developing applications for broadband TV, and Widevine Technologies, the largest provider of content security solutions to the video over IP market and inventor of the Virtual SmartCard™, today announced that their integrated technologies are providing secure TV over IP in one of the world’s largest Multimedia on Demand (MOD) deployments for Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom. As part of Chunghwa Telecom’s MOD deployment, Widevine’s Cypher™ Suite optimized security solution for Interactive TV (iTV) systems is integrated with Orca’s RiGHTv™ broadband TV middleware for the delivery and management of Video on Demand (VOD) to enable secure delivery of premium content and to protect it from theft by hackers. This allows Chunghwa to expand into new areas and increase revenues by quickly increasing the number of subscribers. “Our MOD deployment is fast growing and on its way to becoming the largest in the world,” said Dr. Chain-Chin Yen, director of MOD, Chunghwa Telecom. “With the secure solution offered by Orca and Widevine, we are able to negotiate with the studios to offer the programs and premium content that will greatly expand our subscriber base and position Chunghwa as a major competitor of Taiwan’s cable television operators.” Chunghwa Telecom operates both domestic and international telecom services in Taiwan. With around three million ADSL subscribers, the company is ideally positioned to offer MOD services including VOD, Near VOD (NVOD) and Karaoke-on-Demand. Service rollout to customers in northern Taiwan began earlier this month with 100,000 subscribers expected in the first year and one million in three years. “Release windows are a major stumbling block in the success of VOD deployments,” said John Hoskins, senior vice president marketing and sales, Widevine Technologies. “Widevine and Orca are addressing these issues with our Cypher technology that safeguards premium content, thereby relaxing Hollywood release windows and increasing adoption of VOD by subscribers.” “We are delighted to work with Widevine in integrating their security solutions into our leading broadband TV software solution, RiGHTv, to provide one of the few TV over IP deployments with security,” said Yosi Glick, vice president of marketing and business development, Orca Interactive. “We look forward to additional opportunities for commercial deployments to generate significant average revenue per user (ARPU) for our customers.” About Orca Interactive Orca Interactive, a member of the Emblaze Group (LSE: BLZ), is a leading provider of middleware solutions to enable xDSL and FTTx operators to offer enhanced entertainment services such as broadcast TV, video-on-demand and interactive services. Orca Interactive Announces Benchmark Results for Broadband-TV on the Newly Released RiGHTv(tm) 3.5
Orca Interactive Announces Benchmark Results for Broadband-TV on the Newly Released RiGHTv(tm) 3.5
Record Breaking Results Achieved Running on Oracle Technology
January 21, 2004 |
RA’ANANA, Israel – 21 January 2004 – Orca Interactive, a member of the Emblaze Group (LSE: BLZ) and global market leader in developing applications for broadband TV, today announced that it achieved record-breaking benchmark results while testing 100,000 subscribers accessing Orca’s RiGHTv 3.5 on Oracle platform. RiGHTv™ applications software solutions include RiGHTv™ XVOD for VOD extended with advertisements and related T-Commerce features and RiGHTv™ XBIP for Broadband TV extended with EPG (electronic program guide). RiGHTv 3.5 is Orca’s newly released product version. This version features a superior Runtime Engine, optimized to provide superb scalability, performance and security for Broadband-TV applications. The benchmark was performed on the RiGHTv 3.5 High Availability Platform, which is a no-single-point-of-failure platform that accommodates the rigorous requirements of Telcos. The platform is based on best-of-breed components and provides high availability, integrated management and outstanding multi-tier security. In addition, the platform is designed to grow along with the subscriber base, and enables the transparent addition of low-cost components as the system grows. The benchmark simulated an active subscriber-base of 100,000 subscribers using television services in addition to advanced interactive services such as VOD. The subscribers were divided into five profiles:
The benchmark concurrently simulated 30,000 TV zappers, 20,000 TV watchers, 2900 movie browsers, 7800 movie shoppers, and 3600 movie quick buyers. This resulted in a total concurrency rate of 64.3% (about 64,300 concurrent subscribers), and took into account a peak VOD streaming rate of 10%. During the benchmark, the subscribers performed an average of 29,000 activities per minute. The entire subscriber population was simulated using the WebLoad stress testing tool, and individual subscribers were tested on real set-top-boxes. The Oracle database was pre-populated with heavy volume prior to starting the benchmark in order to simulate a real commercial environment. It contained over 35,000,000 rows, divided into:
The benchmark results were as follows:
The benchmark was conducted on a high-availability Telco-grade configuration based on Oracle software, Sun servers and EMC2 storage. The tested platform included:
“Our focus at Orca Interactive has always been creating a Telco-grade platform ready for delivering television services to hundreds of thousands of subscribers,” said Dotan Naveh, Vice President of Research and Development for Orca Interactive. “This benchmark demonstrates RiGHTv’s inherent scalability, performance and availability. The benchmark was performed on an economical platform and fully utilized our product’s ability to scale effectively on entry-level servers; we succeeded in demonstrating near linear scalability and the ability to serve a large subscriber base from a single system at a very attractive cost-per-subscriber. The Oracle platform allowed us to achieve near liner scalability with great result on a small server.” RiGHTv is based on the Oracle platform, and combines the Oracle Database, Oracle9i Application Server running the OC4J container, Oracle Web Cache, and Oracle TopLink, an object-relational mapping tool. It utilizes advanced Oracle features such as Advanced Queuing, Oracle Text, OC4J Clustering, personalization features in Web Cache and XML-based features. “Orca Interactive has an extremely professional team with a very comprehensive knowledge of building a Telco-grade product,” said Tim Payne, Senior Director, Oracle Technology Europe Middle East and Africa. “In this benchmark, they demonstrated their ability to serve very large numbers of subscribers in very demanding installations. This kind of environment requires a very capable software technology to provide proper service to customers, and Oracle has demonstrated here, as so often, that its portfolio is the best at delivering this.” Oracle is a registered trademark of Oracle Corporation and/or its affiliates.
